Follow God’s Design

Ever wonder what it takes to be a man or woman? Is it really determined by what one does? Then that means every man who beat up somebody in a fight is a man. Conversely, women who are just homemakers and not employees are truly women.

Is it also defined by one’s fashion sense? If you wear deep, woody scents it must mean you are a man. Or spritz on you a light, sweet fragrance then you are definitely a woman. Wearing a Rajo Laurel tuxedo? You’re a man. Covered by a Monique Lhuiller evening dress? You must be a woman.

Thing is, those don’t make sense. If you put a man in a gown, then he’s still a man in a gown. If you make a woman beat someone else, she’s still very much a woman biologically! If doing things does not define your identity as a human being at all, then what does?

The answer is found in the Bible:

26 Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” – Genesis 1:16-27 [NKJV]

Our identity as human beings is defined by the design of our Creator: God. First point is that our origin is from Him. We were made in His image, a representative of God. We are similar, but not identical to Him. Our identity and defining traits were part of God’s design for each gender. That is why men are masculine and women are feminine.

Okay, our identity comes from God, but then so what? Because each gender (only male and female) was made according to a particular design, we are to glorify God by following that design. Meaning if you are a man, be and act like the way you were made: as a man. If you are a woman, be and act like the way you were made: as a woman.

Allow me to illustrate “glorifying God by following His design”. Suppose you buy an iPhone. The iPhone is not so without its operating system: the iOS. That’s what makes it unique and exclusive, right? Now supposing one day, you open your iPhone and it doesn’t run on iOS anymore. Instead, it runs on Android! How would you respond? Definitely not in a good way. Why? Because you know that Apple products were created to run on iOS alone. You’d probably bring it to an Apple store and have it repaired. Same goes with an Android phone. If it one day worked on iOS, then you would bring it back to Samsung, Lenovo, or Asus to reprogram the OS back to Android. These phones were created with a particular identity and purpose. If the manufacturer heard about the malfunctioning OS, they wouldn’t be happy about it. But if they heard that their phones were running as they were originally created, they would be pleased.

Does it all make sense now?  Being religious will not help you fully grasp and apply this truth. Though the Philippines claims to be the only Christian nation in Southeast Asia, a 2006 World Health Organization survey recognized that 10% of the population that time were gay (around 804,280 men). This statistic didn’t include the lesbians, transgenders, bisexuals, and even queers. Today, the figure might be much higher than 11 years ago. It is only through a relationship of humility and obedience that we can glorify God by following our design. Meaning if you are a man, be and act like the way you were made: as a man. If you are a woman, be and act like the way you were made: as a woman.

Here’s another harrowing story. John Hopkins University shut down sex change surgeries in 1979 up until 2016. Why? Psychiatrist Dr. Paul R. McHugh noted that patients who went through the operation went into an even deeper state of confusion afterwards. Men who surgically became women lost their feelings over time and reverted to preferring women. However, because they were now surgically women, it seemed as though they were engaging in lesbianism. Sometimes, the world overcomplicates the simplicity of God’s design. Humanity says man, woman, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, and queers (LGBT). God said simply man and woman, His man & His woman.

That was God’s perfect design: only man and woman. Biologically, this is the way for humanity to grow and flourish as a race. Some may argue that homosexuality may curb the world’s overpopulation. But if only the homosexuals remained, there would be no chance to grow the human race biologically. You might be thinking, “In vitro fertilization!” But even science has determined the success rate of the in vitro process to be only 23.3%! Whereas naturally-occurring conceptions have a success rate of 70%! Take note, this was God’s design all along!

So there you have it. Not just a bunch of religious, outdated views, but even scientific facts bolstering what is in the Bible: God’s design is still the way to go.

What are we to do? Simply follow it. Men, that means being the Godly leaders in the church and at home (1 Timothy 3:12; Ephesians 6:4);the lover, leader, provider, and protector of your wife (Ephesians 5:25-28) as Christ is for His church; and caring mentors of your children (Ephesians 6:4).

Women, be submissive to the headship of your husband (Ephesians 5:22-24). This applies even in church, work, and every area of your life. Don’t go against his leading unless it is unbiblical. And even if you disagree, be respectful of him (Ephesians 5:29).

In the next weeks, we’ll specifically talk about how each gender can fulfill their God-given design.
