For the past two weeks we’ve been talking about the design of God for men and women. Last week we focused on the men. This time around, we’ll focus on the women!
If men are the heads of their families and churches, women were designed by God to be their helpers.
“18 And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’ 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ – Genesis 2:18-22 [NKJV]
Now what does ‘woman’ mean? The Hebrew word for ‘woman’ is ‘ishsha’, meaning ‘soft’. This was derived from ‘man’, which is ‘ish’, meaning ‘strong’. From there, we see that God’s design for man was specifically to be strong and women were his counterpart, ‘soft’.
Note also that women were created to be man’s helper. That doesn’t mean his maid or personal assistant. As we learned in the first message of this series, the term ‘helper’ in the original Hebrew is ‘ezer kenegdo’.
“Ezer” – To rescue, to save, to be strong
“Kenegdo” – A mirror opposite, corresponding to, possessing the other responsibilities
So literally, this means ‘saving opposite’. You are equal, but just have different roles. Men are the leaders, women are the followers. Having two leaders or two followers would be unproductive. Men and women balance each other out.
As we go along, it is important to remember that all women, whether married or single, are to model femininity – distinctive womanhood – in their various relationships by exhibiting a distinctive modesty, responsiveness, and gentleness of spirit. Today, we’ll be learning about the traits of a genuine Biblical woman and how they can be applied. Though this post focuses on women, men, do keep reading. This’ll help you narrow down what you are looking for in a future wife.
- She seeks God first
“33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” – Matthew 6:33-34 [NKJV]
When there’s a problem that pops up in your life, do you worry ladies? Do you text and call everyone on your phone to update them, or seek God first in your worries? A Biblical woman brings all of her concerns to the Lord before anyone else, even her man. Why? Because she knows that God cares for her (1 Peter 5:17).
- She speaks and acts faithfully
A Biblical woman’s words are always gracious and according to God’s design for her (Colossians 4:6). Her words are wise and kind (Proverbs 31:26). She is balanced, not maligning anyone (1 Timothy 3:11). She is also not a nag or disrespectful (Proverbs 19:13, 20:9, 19). In other words, a true Biblical woman is able to walk her talk.
- She exhibits true beauty
“3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” – 1 Peter 3:3-4 [NKJV]
Are focused on the brands of your top, bottoms, bag, and shoes? Having the latest Dolce & Gabbana bag is great and all, but that’s not going to matter when you meet God face-to-face in heaven. What will is a woman’s inner beauty: her transformed, Godly character such as a gentle and quiet spirit, her inner woman, selflessness to others, and ability to admit her faults. A woman of Godly and nobler character is much more precious than precious gems (Proverbs 31:10).
- She serves the Lord
“18 And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’” – Genesis 2:18 [NKJV]
Not only is she a man’s partner in all aspects of life according to design, but she first and foremost serves God. Just as Jesus came to serve and not to serve, she also serves others. By that example, she serves God through obedience.
Okay, so those are nice traits and all, but how does a woman attain these admirable attributes? Here are the application points:
- Be familiar with God’s Word.
“4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4 [NKJV]
The first and most important way to achieve all this is to be familiar with God’s Word. In there is the design He had for woman. When she finds it and obeys, she will be able to live out her God-given purpose.
The most basic way to do this is to do this is to spend quality time with God. Ladies, do you give more time to God or choosing which dress to wear the next day? Never neglect your quiet time (Bible reading and prayer).
- Exhibit a calm and quietness of spirit.
Just as we mentioned in the 4 traits above, a defining characteristic of a Biblical woman is a soft, gentle, and quiet spirit. Practice responding calmly towards others. See how differently they respond when they observe your gentleness.
- Be grounded in Christ
“6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” – Colossians 2:6-7 [NKJV]
Not only do you know about Christ, but you genuinely are rooted in your relationship with Him. So much so that applying all these things are second nature to you. Even when things get tough, are firmly secure in God? Is He your peace and portion (Lamentations 3:24)?
Groundedness in Christ stems from your deep intimacy with Him. Therefore, to be grounded in God means that you are consistently obedient and intimate with Him. This means that you have moved from head knowledge to a lifestyle of following Him. This results in growing deeper in your relationship with Him.
- You practice prayer and intercession as part of your daily life.
“…17 pray without ceasing…” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16 [NKJV]
A Godly woman is also characterized by her prayer life. She serves by interceding for others and following up how they are. Such is the care women can give to others. Seek the welfare of others through prayer. Don’t also just pray during your quiet time, but talk to God in prayer throughout the day! You have access to Him 24/7. Use it!
- Practice being generous in your resources. Be a giving person.
“20 She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet.” – Proverbs 31:20-21 [NKJV]
Clearly, a Biblical woman is a giving woman. Not only do you meet the needs of others through prayer, but physically as well! As James said,
“15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” – James 2:15-17 [NKJV]
The application of this is simple: Prayerfully give to those in need!
- Exhibit the joy of the Lord.
“22 A merry heart does good, like medicine…” – Proverbs 17:22 [NKJV]
Life is tough enough as it is for a woman to be a nag or negative. A woman who truly has the Lord will not deny the hardships of life, but will face them with certainty and hope in the Lord!
“5 Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come.” – Proverbs 31:25 [NKJV]
How is she able to be all of these? Because of her intimacy with God. Only when a woman is so intimate with God can she be able to live out her true design.
If you’ve been blessed by this message, don’t know God, and want to live out His design for you as a woman, please pray this prayer:
“Dear God in heaven, I come to you only in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived. I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross, died for my sins. I turn away from my sinful life. Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. I have faith that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word. Restore your perfect design in me as the woman you intended me to be. Thank you, Father, for making a way through Jesus. Christ to give me eternal life. Holy Spirit, help me live the life God has called me to. All for Your glory alone, amen!”
